About the Location

Why we love
Thropton

A quiet and friendly Village on the doorstep of the Northumberland National Park, Thropton is the perfect base for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers.

The Three Wheat Heads bar and restaurant is a firm family favourite with a truly excellent Sunday Carvery, stunning views, a great beer garden and very generous portion sizes!!

Nestled at the foot of the Northumberland National Park, Thropton is a quiet rural Village surrounded by the most spectacular landscape. Sawmill Cottage is conveniently located down a peaceful country lane, overlooking the Simonside Hills. The Village has an excellent Country Pub called the Three Wheat Heads which has a bar and restaurant with some of the most spectacular views you'll ever see. There is a good sized beer garden with a play area for the kids and the portion sizes are generally immense! It's been a family favourite of ours for many years and is a huge asset to Sawmill Cottage just being a ouple of minutes walk away.

Known locally as the Capital of Coquetdale, the traditional Northumbrian Village of Rothbury is just a couple of miles away, built on a hilllside in the sandstone Simonside Hills. It offers an excellent range of shops, with many art galleries, tea rooms, cafes and pubs. It makes a very convenient base for fishing and for walking into the Northumberland National Park and Simonside, as well as offering less strenuous riverside walks. Thropton lies near the centre of rural Northumberland, 14 miles from Alnwick, 17 miles from Morpeth, 18 miles from unspoilt beaches and 31 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Nearby Cragside House and Gardens, home to Lord Armstrong is perhaps the most famous attraction in the area.

Rothbury has an award-winning selection of local, independent shops in which you can buy practically anything from meat to shoes and wine. There are also a number of art and crafts galleries that celebrate and sell original and local crafts.
